MARIETTA, Ohio - Carson Milner's excellent indoor track and field season will be rewarded with a trip to the NAIA National Championships.
Milner hit a national qualifying standard with a second-place time of 8:30.57 in the 3,000-meter run, pacing Midway's fifth-place finish at the two-day River States Conference Indoor Championships, which concluded on Saturday.Â
The Eagles finished with 43 points. Rio Grande won going away with 259.5, well ahead of the 139 scored by runner-up Indiana East.Â
Milner,
who was also a national qualifier in cross country this fall, hit the indoor 'B' standard. Generally, the mark is 8:26, but due to a 200-meter flat stretch on the track, his conversion time dropped to 8:24.70, getting him into the national field.
All told, Milner was one of four runners to break the previous event meet record of 8:42.48. Unfortunately, one of those runners, Rio Grande's Tyler Jenkins, was slightly faster, running an 8:29.31.
That was one of two all-conference finishes for Milner, who also ran a 15:19.32 to finish third in the 5,000-meter run Friday.
He was joined on the all-conference stage by
Brayden Carson, who on Friday placed second with a 1.91-meter mark in the high jump.
Other top-five finishers were
Finley Mayoh, who was fourth in Friday's 600-meter run in 1:22.82, and Benjamin Jones, who was fourth in Saturday's triple jump at 12.85 meters.
Harry Van Why IV also scored in high jump, taking seventh at 1.76.
The Eagles also scored in three relays.
The top finish came by the 4x400 team of
Gregory Anderson,
Elie Mugisha, Jones and
Steven Meyer, who were sixth in 3:37.61 on Saturday.
The 4x800 team of Meyer,
Adam Higgs,
Connor Byrd and
Noah Hampton were seventh in 8:48.48 with the same four placing eighth in 11:46.26 in the 4,000 distance medley.
Milner will represent Midway at the Indoor National Championships, which run from March 5-7 in Gainesville, Fla.
