MIDWAY, Ky. - After helping a short-handed Midway women's basketball team execute a double-digit second half comeback on the road Saturday,
Morgan Cross' efforts were rewarded with a River States Conference Defensive Player of the Week award.
With the Eagles' top-two scorers out of action, Cross put together a dominant effort in which she had 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting while pulling down 11 rebounds and grabbing seven steals
in a 65-56 win over Indiana Kokomo.
The points, rebounds and steals totals were all career highs for the sophomore guard.
She had 12 points and six rebounds in the third quarter alone, as Midway closed the period on a 20-5 run after falling behind 39-28. Cross was also the driving force of a defense that forced 15 turnovers in the final 12:38 of game action.
This is the first Player of the Week award won by Cross and the fourth by an Eagle this season.
A'Lyrica Hughes won the Defensive award on
Nov. 3 and
Jan. 19Â and
Alexys Moore was named
Offensive Player of the Week Nov. 17.
The win Saturday helped Midway, which is 18-5 overall and 9-2 in the RSC, extend its win streak to nine games heading into a big week of action.
Following a 6 p.m. road game against Kentucky Christian on Tuesday, the Eagles host No. 8 Rio Grande (22-1, 11-0), the leader of the RSC East, on Thursday.
Midway is currently a game-and-a-half ahead of Shawnee State (8-4) for second in the East Division.
