MIDWAY, Ky. - Just as she did
to open her freshman campaign,
A'Lyrica Hughes began year two at Midway by winning the River States Conference Defensive Player of the Week award.
Hughes averaged 9.3 rebounds and 2.6 steals to help the Eagles win two of their first three games to begin the 2025-26 campaign.
She had four steals each in wins over Miami Middletown and Bryan. She also had 12 rebounds against Tennessee Southern on Friday and a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double against Bryan.
A First-Team All-River States Conference player last season, Hughes was eighth in the country with 3.3 steals per-game a year ago.
This is her fourth Defensive Player of the Week award. Outside of the season opener, she also won it on
Nov. 26 and
Jan. 6 last season.
The Eagles return home to face Bluefield (Va.) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. In the home opener against Miami Middletown,
they scored 134 points, the most scored by a Midway team since at least the 2004-05 season.
