Midway Men's Basketball unable to slow Asbury offensive attack

WILMORE, Ky. -- The Midway University men's basketball team returned to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon when they traveled to nearby Wilmore to take on Asbury (Ky.) in a River States Conference matchup.

After Midway (6-17, 2-12 RSC) trailed 43-36 at halftime, Asbury (16-8, 9-5 RSC) went on a 14-0 run to start the second half as they were able to come away with the 94-76 victory.

Asbury – who entered the game as one of the top scoring teams in the country – finished the game shooting 52.2 percent (36-69) overall. They also shot 36 percent from the three-point line where they finished the game at 9-of-25.

Midway, on the other hand, shot 44.8 percent (30-67) overall for the game. They also went just 6-for-22 from long distance for 27.3 percent. The Eagles got good production from their reserves as they held a 23-15 edge in bench points.

Coming off a 15 point performance against Simmons (Ky.), freshman, Ty Sparling, continued his streaky shooting from beyond the arc. The Kokomo, Ind. native hit back-to-back triples to open the game to give Midway the early 6-1 edge.

A couple of minutes later, Will Hudson (Calhoun, Ky.) and DJ Townsend (Somerset, Ky.) hit a pair of treys as Midway held a 20-16 lead. With the game tied at 29 all, Asbury scored seven unanswered as they would take a 43-36 lead into the locker room.

Asbury came out firing on all cylinders to start the second half. The home team opened with a 14-0 run to stretch their lead to 21, 57-36, less than four minutes into the second stanza.

Freshman, Kwon Evans (Louisville, Ky.) did his best to keep Midway in the game in the second half where he scored 17, but Asbury proved to be too much as they came away with the 94-76 win.

Evans led the way for the Eagles as he went for a career-high 25 points to go with his eight rebounds. He also swatted four shots. Will Hudson and DJ Townsend added 15 and 14, respectively, while Ty Sparling pitched in with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Midway will have a couple of days off as they will return to action on Thursday, February 8, when they host Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) at 7:30 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
