Midway Men's Basketball suffers conference road loss at Alice Lloyd

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. -- Following a three game homestand to begin the second semester, the Midway men's basketball team took their three-game win streak on road on Tuesday night when they traveled to Pippa Passes to battle Alice Lloyd (Ky.).

Unfortunately for Midway, they saw their three-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday night in the ALC Campus Center after suffering an 89-80 loss to the homestanding Eagles.

Midway – who fell to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in River States Conference play with the loss – had four players finish in double figures compared to just two for Alice Lloyd, but they struggled to contain the defending RSC Player of the Week, Blake Smith.

Smith – who leads the RSC with 25.2 points per game – followed up his player of the week honor by going for 40 points, six rebounds and five assists on Tuesday night. The senior hit 13-of-22 from the floor, while going 12-for-15 from the free throw line.

The Eagles stayed neck-and-neck with the home squad in the early going as a Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) triple gave the visitors an 18-16 lead. Threes from Kwon Evans (Louisville, Ky.) and Luke Thorburg (St. Louis, Mo.) kept Midway close, but Alice Lloyd took a 41-33 lead at half.

Midway did their best to contain Smith in the opening stanza by holding the 6-3 guard to just 11 points, but he soon caught fire early in the second half. Smith scored 13 of his 29 second half points in the opening eight minutes of the second half as Alice Lloyd built a 58-44 lead.

With time running out, Midway got back-to-back layups from Kaleb Britt (Bowling Green, Ky.) and a trey from Miller to cut the deficit to seven with 2:05 left, but it was too little too late as Alice Lloyd – who improve to 9-9 overall and 3-3 in RSC play – held on for the 89-80 victory.

Kwon Evans led the way for the Eagles with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Luke Thorburg added 15 points and seven boards. Donnie Miller chipped in 13 points and DJ Lujan (Phoenix, Ariz.) carded 12 points in the loss.

Midway finished the night shooting just 40.9 percent from the floor compared to 45.6 percent for Alice Lloyd. Midway did hit 11-of-28 from three, while ALC went 5-for-18, but the home team hit 22-of-29 from the charity stripe compared to 15-of-22 for Midway.

Midway will now have a quick turnaround as they're back in action on Thursday night when they host RSC rival Asbury (Ky.) at 7:30 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
