Fast start leads Eagles to win over Asbury in home opener

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following road trips to Georgetown (Ky.) and Crowley's Ridge (Ark.), the Midway University men's basketball team opened the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they hosted Asbury (Ky.) in Marshall Gymnasium.

Midway scored the opening six points and never looked back. The Eagles took a 49-25 lead at halftime and led by as many as 30 in the second stanza as they cruised to the 87-68 win in their home opener.

With the win, Joe Krupinski's squad improves to 2-1, while Asbury – a former member of the NAIA and River States Conference and new member to the NCAA Division III ranks – drops to 0-2 following the loss.

The Eagles got off to a fast start as Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) and Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) each hit layups before Raekwon Evans (Louisville, Ky.) added a turnaround jumper to give Midway a 6-0 lead less than two minutes in.

Three consecutive layups from Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.), Izaya Sims (East Moline, Ill.) and Evans soon pushed the lead to double digits as Midway never looked back. Evans and Cory Gardner (Owensboro, Ky.) hit back-to-back triples before Travis capped an 8-0 run with a trey in the final seconds as Midway took a 49-25 lead into the locker room.

Midway torched nets in the opening frame shooting 51.3 percent (20-39) overall, while they hit 8-of-13 from downtown for 61.5 percent.

The streaky shooting for the home team would continue into the second half where they shot 53.6 percent (15-28) from the floor overall and 50 percent from three (4-8).

A 9-2 lead early in the second stanza pushed the lead to 29 less than five minutes before back-to-back layups from Evans and Tate extended the lead to its largest of the contest at 74-44 as Midway cruised to the 87-68 victory.

Raekwon Evans led all scorers with 21 points to go with his nine rebounds. Evans shot 9-of-13 from the floor and knocked down 3-of-4 from downtown in the win. Recardo Travis added 14 points and six boards, while Donnie Miller scored 12 points and dished out five assists. Cory Gardner also reached double figures with 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench.

Midway finished the contest shooting 52.2 percent overall and 57.1 percent from three, while Asbury shot just 33.3 percent from the floor and 17.6 percent from behind the arc.

The Eagles will now have a short break before playing the first of three exhibitions on Tuesday (Nov. 16) at Kentucky Wesleyan in Owensboro, Ky. at 8:45 p.m. ET.
