Late rally propels Grenadiers to win over Men's Basketball

NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- After extending their win streak to four on Saturday with a road win at Oakland City (Ind.), the Midway men's basketball team continued their road swing with a trip to New Albany, Ind. to battle IU Southeast (Ind.) on Tuesday.

The Eagles led by as many as five early in the second stanza, but with the game tied at 65 with just over six minutes remaining, the Grenadiers took over. IU Southeast responded by scoring the next nine points en route to clinching the 80-72 victory.

The loss ends Midway's win streak at four as they fall to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in River States Conference play. IU Southeast, meanwhile, improves to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in league play with the win.

Trailing by seven less than three minutes in, the Eagles finally found their footing before going on a quick 11-1 run as they took an 11-8 lead. Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) helped kickstart the run with a triple, while Izaya Sims (East Moline, Ill.) hit a pair of layups.

Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) then got a dunk in transition to give the Eagles their first lead of the contest before Miller capped the run with a layup as Midway took an 11-8 lead with 12:59 left in the opening stanza.

The Eagles would lead throughout the first half, but they could never extend their lead by more than four as IU Southeast tied the game on seven different occasions in the first half. Glenn Hill Jr. scored the final four points for IUS to give his team a 40-38 lead at intermission.

The Grenadiers torched the nets shooting 60.9 percent in a first half that saw seven ties and four lead changes. The second half featured much of the same with eight ties and three lead changes.

The Eagles extended their lead to its largest of the contest at 61-56 on the heels of a 7-0 run, but IU Southeast answered with a quick 9-1 run as they took a 65-62 lead with 6:09 left.

A corner trey from Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) briefly tied the game at 65, but that would be the final time the game was tied. The Grenadiers responded with a 9-0 run as they would lead by as many as 10 down the stretch en route to the 80-72 victory.

Four players notched double figures in the loss led by Raekwon Evans (Louisville, Ky.) who carded his first double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Donnie Miller added 17 points, while Recardo Travis and Izaya Sims scored 10 points apiece.

Joe Krupinski's squad is now scheduled to return to action this weekend when they compete in the Central Bank Jim Reid Classic in Georgetown, Ky. on Friday and Saturday. They're scheduled to open play in the classic on Friday (Nov. 26) at 4 p.m. ET against Greenville (Ill.).
