Box Score 2 GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Midway University men's basketball team was back in action on Friday when they broke a number of program records after winning a high scoring affair over Greenville (Ill.) in the Central Bank Jim Reid Classic hosted by Georgetown (Ky.).
Midway – who entered the game averaging 78.5 points per game – had eclipsed that total by the time the first half buzzer sounded as they scored 81 points in the first half and 76 points in the second as they would cruise to a 157-135 victory in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
With the win, Joe Krupinski's team improves to 5-2 overall as they're scheduled to wrap up play in the Central Bank Jim Reid Classic on Saturday (Nov. 27) when they battle Wilberforce (Ohio) at 2 p.m. ET in Georgetown.
Greenville – who falls to 1-6 overall following the loss – plays the 'Grinnell System' which features a new line change every minute. The Panthers are averaging 113.7 points per game, while they're allowing their opponents to score 145.1 points per contest.
Not only did Midway score a program record 157 points, while they also shot an astonishing 75 percent from the floor where they went 72-of-96. The Eagles also recorded a program best 50 assists on those 72 made field goals.
The Blue and Gold won the rebounding battle 53-35, while they held the Panthers to 44.6 percent (50-of-112) from the floor. Greenville also hit a season-best 25 treys in their 60 attempts where they shot 41.7 percent.
The first half was a bit of a back-and-forth battle that featured six ties and five lead changes, but the final tie was at 51 apiece with 7:40 remaining in the first half. Midway would take an 81-75 lead into the locker room before outscoring the Panthers by 16 in the second half en route to the 157-135 victory.
The Eagles had four players reach double figures who all had career nights to lead the Blue and Gold to the victory. Raekwon Evans led the way with a program record 45 points on 22-of-28 shooting. The senior also pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out seven assists in the win.
Nick Keeton – a freshman from Paintsville, Ky. – scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while he shot 16-of-17 from the floor. Donnie Miller – a sophomore from Newport, Ky. – also scored 30 points and dished out 12 assists hitting 11-of-17 from the floor.
Cory Gardner, meanwhile, finished one rebound shy of a triple double. The sophomore from Owensboro, Ky. finished with 20 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds in the win. Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) also dished out eight dimes to help lead the Blue and Gold to the win.
Midway wraps up play in the Central Bank Jim Reid Classic on Saturday when they battle Wilberforce at 2 p.m. ET in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
