Box Score GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Following a COVID shortened season in 2020-21, the Midway University men's basketball team got their 2021-22 season underway on Tuesday (Nov. 3) when they traveled to nearby Georgetown (Ky.) to tangle with the Tigers.
The Tigers – who are currently ranked No. 15 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll – scored the first four points of the contest and never looked back. Georgetown took a 45-25 lead at halftime before cruising to the 78-55 victory in David-Reid Alumni Gym.
Midway – who falls to 0-1 on the season with the loss – finished the night shooting just 39.3 percent from the floor and 17.4 percent from three, while they also committed 18 turnovers which turned into 24 points for the home team.
Georgetown, meanwhile, shot 45.5 percent from the floor and 26.3 percent. The Tigers – who continued their perfect start to the season improving to 3-0 – also held a 16-8 edge in bench points in the victory.
The Tigers turned a slim one-point lead in the early going into a 19-7 lead following a 13-1 run with 14:12 left in the opening frame. The Eagles cut the deficit to nine with 4:36 left in the first half, but Georgetown stretched the lead to 45-25 at half after putting together a 13-2 run.
The two squads went back-and-forth in the second stanza, but Georgetown would lead by as many as 32 en route to the 78-55 victory.
Leading the way for the Blue and Gold was Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) who carded 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting. Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) added nine points and Raekwon Evans (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in eight points and 13 rebounds, while Rico Tate (Memphis, Tenn.) posted eight points in the loss.
Kyran Jones led all scorers with 27 points to go with a game-high 14 boards, while Derrin Boyd added 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Midway is back in action this weekend when they travel to Paragould, Ark. on Thursday to battle Crowley's Ridge (Ark.) on Friday (Nov. 5) at 7 p.m. ET.
