Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a nine-game road swing and a month since their last home game, the Midway men's basketball team returned to the friendly confines of Marshall Gymnasium on Saturday (Dec. 18) when they hosted St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.).
The Eagles would take a 44-37 lead into the locker room, but they came out firing in the second half and shot 60 percent as they outscored the Pomeroys by 25 en route to claiming an easy 99-67 victory in their final game before the holidays.
Saturday's outing was Midway's first home game since Nov. 18 and their first official game since Dec. 4 as they improve to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in River States Conference play. The Pomeroys – who are a first-year program – fall to 1-13 overall and 0-6 in league play.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods came out firing as they hit three 3's within the opening three minutes of the contest to take an early 9-6 lead. The opening nine minutes of the game featured five ties and three lead changes, but the Eagles soon took control with 11:44 left in the first half.
Midway got back-to-back layups from Recardo Travis (Louisville, Ky.) and Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) before Raekwon Evans (Louisville, Ky.) scored six straight points as part of a 10-2 run that saw Midway take a 27-20 edge.
The home squad led by as many as 10 in the first half, but another trey from Elkin Ramirez-Vazquez cut Midway's lead to 44-37 at intermission.
Unlike the first half, it was the home team that came out firing to begin the second staza as they soon put the game out of reach. Midway opened the half with a 20-2 run highlighted by five points from Evans and eight from Miller including back-to-back triples from the sophomore.
Travis followed that up an old fashioned three-point play as the lead grew to 67-41 with 12:57 remaining. The Pomeroys attempted to get back in the game with a 9-4 run, but the Eagles answered with a 14-4 run as they would coast to the 99-67 victory.
Midway had four players reach double figures in the win led by Recardo Travis who finished with a game-high 21 points hitting 8-of-14 from the floor. Raekwon Evans carded his fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go with a team-high six assists.
Donnie Miller chipped in 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting with five assists, while Cory Gardner (Owensboro, Ky.) chipped in 11 points in 15 minutes off the bench.
Midway shot 53.9 percent for the game as they had 31 assists on their 41 made field goals. They forced the Pomeroys into 16 turnovers which led to a 25-6 edge in points off turnovers.
The Eagles will now get a chance to enjoy the holiday before returning to campus to prepare for the second semester which gets underway on Jan. 6 with a road trip to Rio Grande (Ohio).
