Updated Bracket

KOKOMO, Ind. -- Despite a consistent and steady rain throughout the game, the Midway softball team opened play in the River States Conference Tournament on Thursday (May 5) at Championship Park in Kokomo, Indiana.

After neither team scored for the opening four frames, the Eagles broke the game open in the top of the fifth scoring nine runs to grab a 9-0 lead. The Trailblazers scored one in the bottom half, but Midway held on for the 9-1 run-rule victory in five innings.

With the win, Krystal Cammuse's squad picks up win No. 30 on the season and improves to 30-14 on the season. Ohio Christian, meanwhile, slips to 23-20 on the season.

The Eagles now advance in the winner's bracket where they'll meet Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) on Friday at 11 a.m. ET. The Trailblazers, on the other hand, fall to the consolation bracket with the loss.

Midway left five on base over the opening four frames, but they finally broke through in the top of the fifth when they blew the game open. The Eagles plated nine runs – seven of which came with two outs – on eight hits in the inning.

Katie Rhodes (Cedar Hill, Tenn.) doubled and later scored on a wild pitch, while Mary Andres (Louisville, Ky.) pushed the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. Despite two outs, the Eagles did the bulk of their damage pushing seven runs across.

Keddandi Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) kept the inning going with a double before later scoring on a wild pitch. Alyssa Yates (Georgetown, Ky.) then cleared the bases with a three-run double, while she later scored on an error when Taylor Dukate (Owensboro, Ky.) singled to center. Carson Flynn (Henderson, Ky.) capped the scoring with a two-run triple down the left field line.

The Trailblazers pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth, but left the bases loaded as Midway held on for the 9-1 run-rule victory.

Madison Ludwig (Louisville, Ky.) went the distance for the Eagles and improved to 19-7 on the season. She allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts to record her 100th punchout of the year.

Flynn led the way at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Dukate added two hits, an RBI and a run, while Makenna Talcott (Gray, Ga.) went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Rhodes, Thompson, Ludwig and Yates each had a double in the win.

Midway now advances to play the Pomeroys on Friday at 11 a.m. ET. In their four meetings in the regular season, the Pomeroys won three of four. They also just met four days ago as they split a doubleheader in the regular season finale for both squads.

Live stats and live video will be available for Friday's contest.
