Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- After opening their trip to Pittsburgh with a loss to Point Park (Pa.), the Midway men's basketball wrapped up their trip to 'Steel City' on Saturday (Dec. 7) and did so on a high note with a big win over Carlow (Pa.) at Oakland Catholic High School.
After losing the rebounding battle against Point Park on Thursday, the Eagles did a complete 180 and dominated the glass against the Celtics en route to the 74-53 victory.
With the win, Joe Krupinski's squad improves to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in River States Conference play, while the Celtics fall to 1-17 overall and 0-7 in RSC play following the loss.
Saturday's victory saw the Eagles dominate the rebounding battle with a 55-29 edge. The 55 rebounds are the third most in program history and most since Jan. 5, 2019, while their 22 offensive rebounds sets a new program record.
In total, the Blue and Gold held a 22-9 advantage on the offensive glass which led to a 19-4 edge in second chance points.
Midway didn't shoot the ball particularly well, but their defense held the Celtics to 30.6 percent for the game and 26.9 percent from downtown.
The Eagles fell behind 8-2 in the opening minutes of the game, but they responded with a 15-0 run after holding the Celtics without a point for six plus minutes. They would lead by as many as 16 in the opening frame before seeing Carlow cut the deficit to nine at intermission.
The Celtics cut the deficit to seven to begin the second frame, but a jump shot by Donnie Miller (Newport, Ky.) helped fuel an 8-0 run that saw Midway extend their lead to 44-29. Miller later scored nine straight points for his team including a personal 7-0 run at one point as the lead grew to it's largest of the game at 57-33 with just over 11 minutes left.
Carlow cut the deficit to 15 with just over six minutes left, but back-to-back triples by TJ O'Connor (Miami, Fla.) and Donovan Morris (Lexington, Ky.) stretched the lead back to 16 as they cruised to the 74-53 victory.
Miller – who scored 17 points in the second half – led the way for the Eagles with a season-high 31 points. The junior guard also dished out a team-high five dimes in the win. Nick Keeton (Paintsville, Ky.) notched his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Will VanHook (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Tobias Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) also helped on the glass grabbing eight rebounds each.
The Eagles are now set to return to Marshall Gymnasium on Tuesday (Jan. 10) when they host Rio Grande (Ohio) for a River States Conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
