Eagles sweep Blue Raiders behind two one-run victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- After splitting their doubleheader with Thomas More (Ky.) the day before, the Midway softball team hit the road for a doubleheader with Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at Marilyn D. Sparks Park in Columbia, Kentucky.

Midway held a 5-0 lead in the opener, but Lindsey Wilson – who was in the 'receiving votes' portion of the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll – stormed back and forced extra innings. The Eagles scored three in the top of the 10th for a thrilling 9-8 victory.

Game two saw the Blue and Gold trailing 1-0, but they used a two-run fifth to clinch the sweep with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

Following the sweep, Midway levels their record improving to 3-3 on the young season, while the Blue Raiders slip to 8-6 on the year.

Game 1: Midway 9, Lindsey Wilson 8 (10 innings)

Midway couldn't have asked for a better start after putting up a four spot in the first. Kennadi Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) scored the first run on an RBI single before making the score 2-0 when she came around to score on an error.

After Thompson scored on the error, Katie Rhodes (Cedar Hill, Tenn.) stepped to the dish and clubbed a two-run home run – her first of the season – pushing Midway's lead to 4-0.

Midway's offense was at it again in the third tacking on another run. Thompson opened the inning with a single before later scoring on a wild pitch as the lead grew to 5-0.

Lindsey Wilson chipped away at the lead and forced extras after scoring two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two more in the sixth.

Midway's offense was held in check until the ninth when they took a brief 6-5 lead on an RBI single by Thompson. The Blue Raiders answered right back in the bottom half, but the Eagles broke through in the 10th scoring three runs on two hits.

Rhodes picked up an RBI after reaching on a fielder's choice, while two more runs came around to score giving Midway a 9-6 lead. The Blue Raiders scored two in the bottom half and had runners at second and third, but Madison Ludwig (Louisville, Ky.) recorded back-to-back strikeouts to clinch the 9-8 victory.

Ludwig picked up the win for the Eagles improving to 2-1 on the season. She allowed eight runs – five earned – on eight hits in her 10 innings of work in the circle. The senior also fanned eight Lindsey Wilson batters.

Game 2: Midway 2, Lindsey Wilson 1

The nightcap was vastly different than the first as the two squads combined for just three runs compared to the 17 in game one.

Lindsey Wilson struck first scoring one in the fourth, but Midway answered with two in the top of the fifth. Katie Rhodes singled to open the inning before scoring on an RBI double by Sidney Hudnall (Cromwell, Ky.), who scored an RBI double by Raigan Allbert (White Bluff, Tenn.).

The one-run cushion was more than enough for Sarah Jo Calhoun (Campbellsville, Ky.) who turned in one of the best performances of her career. Calhoun (1-1) allowed one unearned run and scattered seven hits in her six innings of work in the circle.

She gave way to Madison Ludwig who picked up her first save of the season after tossing a scoreless seventh to help clinch the 2-1 victory.

UP NEXT: The Blue and Gold are now scheduled to travel to nearby Wilmore, Ky. on Friday to take on Asbury (Ky.) in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. ET.
