Midway Softball pushes win streak to eight with sweep of Mighty Oaks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. -- The Midway softball team returned to the diamond on Friday when they wrapped up their four-game road swing with a River States Conference doubleheader against Oakland City (Ky.).

Thanks to two terrific pitching performances by Madison Ludwig, the Eagles won both ends of the doubleheader taking game one 8-2 before winning game two in extra innings by a final score of 2-1.

Ludwig, a senior from Louisville, Ky., pitched two complete games and tossed 15 total innings without allowing an earned run. She scattered 12 hits and fanned 16 to help lead her squad to a pair of wins.

Following the sweep, the Eagles pushed their winning streak to eight improving to 21-11 overall and 14-4 in league play. They're scheduled to return to action on Saturday when they host Brescia (Ky.) at 3 p.m. ET for Senior Day.

Game 1: Midway 8, Oakland City 2

Midway struck first in the opening frame, scoring three runs on three hits. Taylor Dukate (Owensboro, Ky.) got her squad on the board with an RBI single to left before Makenna Talcott (Gray, Ga.) laced a two-run single to left pushing the advantage to 3-0.

Oakland City cut the deficit to just one after scoring two unearned runs in the bottom half of the first, but the Eagles responded with one in the third and four more in the fourth.

Talcott collected her third RBI of the day with an RBI single in the third, while Raigan Allbert (White Bluff, Tenn.) and Kennadi Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) added RBI singles in the fourth. Madison Ludwig also recorded a sacrifice in the fourth before Thompson scored on an error pushing Midway's lead to 8-2.

Ludwig, who allowed the two runs in the first, was dominant after that tossing six scoreless innings. In total, she allowed seven hits and two unearned runs with nine strikeouts.

Midway had 13 hits as a team with Allbert, Ludwig, Talcott, Mary Andres (Louisville, Ky.), and Carly Jones (Bardstown, Ky.) recording two hits apiece.

Game 2: Midway 2, Oakland City 1 (8 Innings)

The nightcap saw Midway held in check until the sixth inning when they trailed 1-0. The sixth inning saw Raigan Allbert and Kennadi Thompson hit back-to-back singles before Madison Ludwig helped her own cause with an RBI single to left tying the game at 1-1.

The game remained that way until the eighth inning when Midway took their first lead of the contest. Katie Rhodes (Cedar Hill, Tenn.) opened the inning with a double before Thompson brought her home with an RBI single to center field giving her squad the 2-1 lead.

Oakland City would get a two-out base runner in the bottom of the eighth, but she was stranded after the next batter flied out to end the game. Like the first game, Ludwig allowed a run in the first, but responded with seven straight scoreless innings.

She picked up the win and brought her record to 14-5 on the season. She tossed eight innings allowing just five hits with seven strikeouts.

Allbert led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Thompson went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win.
