Box Score 2 MIDWAY, Ky. -- After sweeping Oakland City (Ky.) a day earlier, the Midway softball team returned home on Saturday (April 15) when they welcomed Brescia (Ky.) to William G. Clark Memorial Field for Senior Day.
Midway jumped to an early lead in the opener and held on for the 4-2 victory before completing the sweep with a 1-0 win in the nightcap after scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
Following the sweep, Krystal Cammuse's squad extends their winning streak to 10 improving to 23-11 overall and 16-4 in River States Conference play.
Game 1: Midway 4, Brescia 2
Midway jumped on the Bearcats in the opening frame, scoring three runs on three hits. Katie Rhodes (Cedar Hill, Tenn.) opened the inning with a triple before scoring on an RBI single by Raigan Allbert (White Bluff, Tenn.).
Allbert scored on a sacrifice fly by Madison Ludwig (Louisville, Ky.), while Kennadi Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) – who singled earlier in the inning – scored on an RBI groundout by Taylor Dukate (Owensboro, Ky.).
Brescia answered with a run in the top of the third, but Midway matched with a run in the bottom half. Rhodes reached on an error to lead off the inning before later scoring on an RBI single by Ludwig.
The Bearcats made it interesting with a run in the top of the seventh, but Midway held on for the 4-2 victory. Ludwig tossed a complete game and improved to 15-5 after allowing two runs on seven hits in her seven innings of work. She also struck out four in the win.
Game 2: Midway 1, Brescia 0
Both teams struggled to get anything going offensively as the nightcap turned out to be a pitcher's duel. Neither team scored until the bottom of the sixth when Midway took a 1-0 lead.
Kennadi Thompson had a one-out single that prompted Emily Taylor (Walton, Ky.) in to pinch run. Taylor advanced to second when Madison Ludwig reached a fielder's choice. Following a flyout, Makenna Talcott (Gray, Ga.) stepped to the plate the ripped a two-out single up the middle giving her team a 1-0 lead.
Sarah Jo Calhoun (Campbellsville, Ky.), who pitched six shutout innings, gave way to Ludwig who pitched a perfect seventh to seal the win. Ludwig picked up her second save of the season, while Calhoun improved to 5-3 with the win. She allowed seven hits in her six innings.
