Box Score 2 MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a four-game road trip, the Midway softball team returned home to William G. Clark Memorial Field on Saturday to begin their final week of the regular season with a River States Conference doubleheader against IU Southeast (Ind.).
The Eagles used a four-run seventh inning to come away with a 4-3 walk-off win in the opener but came up short in the nightcap, as the Grenadiers clinched the regular season crown with a 6-2 victory.
Following the split, Midway moves to 27-15 overall and 20-5 in RSC play, while IU Southeast finishes their regular season with a 30-15 record overall and a 22-6 mark in league play.
Game 1: Midway 4, IU Southeast 3
The Grenadiers scored single runs in the first, third, and sixth innings before taking a 3-0 lead into the final frame. Midway was down to their final out and twice down to their final strike before finally getting their offense rolling.
Mary Andres (Louisville, Ky.) singled before Kyra McCall (White House, Tenn.) and Makayla McDowell (Nicholasville, Ky.) each walked to load the bases with two outs.
Katie Rhodes (Cedar Hill, Tenn.) then stepped to the dish and laced a bases clearing triple to right center. With the game tied, Raigan Allbert (White Bluff, Tenn.) sent an RBI single left scoring Rhodes from third and giving Midway the 4-3 walk-off victory.
Madison Ludwig (Louisville, Ky.) picked up the win, improving to 19-7 on the season. She allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in her seven innings of work.
Game 2: IU Southeast 6, Midway 2
The Eagles had a prime opportunity to strike first and break a scoreless draw in the second when they had runners on second and third with one out. Unfortunately for the home team, the next two batters were sent down to end the threat.
The Grenadiers scored three runs on five hits in the third, but Midway answered with a pair in the bottom of the fourth. Kennadi Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) scored on a wild pitch, while Madison Ludwig scored when Makenna Talcott (Gray, Ga.) reached on a fielder's choice.
That would be all the Midway offense could muster up as IU Southeast would tack on two more in fifth and another in the seventh en route to the 6-2 victory.
In the circle, Ludwig was handed the loss after allowing six runs – four earned – on 14 hits in a complete game effort.
