Midway Softball sweeps Trailblazers in RSC doubleheader

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio -- Coming off a sweep of St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.), the Midway softball team returned to action on Friday when they traveled to Circleville, Ohio for a River States Conference doubleheader against Ohio Christian.

Midway nearly squandered a four-run lead in the opener but held on for a narrow 6-5 victory before completing the sweep with a 9-0 run-rule victory in the nightcap.

With the sweep, Krystal Cammuse's squad improves to 17-11 overall and 10-4 in RSC play, while the Trailblazers slip to 17-11 overall and 7-7 in league play.

Game 1: Midway 6, Ohio Christian 5

After being held scoreless for the first couple of innings, the Eagles got on the board thanks to an Ohio Christian error in the third. Taylor Dukate (Owensboro, Ky.) drove in a pair after reaching on an error as Midway grabbed the early 2-0 advantage.

The Trailblazers tied the game with a pair in the fourth, but Midway answered by scoring two in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Makayla McDowell (Nicholasville, Ky.) drove in a run with a one-out error, while Carly Jones (Nicholasville, Ky.) added an RBI groundout.

Then in the seventh, Madison Ludwig helped her own cause when she clubbed her team-high fourth homer of the season. The Louisville, Ky. native hit a two-run home run pushing the lead to 6-2.

Ohio Christian scored three in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game, but the Eagles held on for the 6-5 victory. Ludwig picked up the win and improved to 11-5 on the season after striking out nine in a complete game performance.

Game 2: Midway 9, Ohio Christian 0 (5 Innings)

The Eagles struck first with a run in the opening frame. Katie Rhodes (Cedar Hill, Tenn.) reached on a leadoff error before later scoring when Madison Ludwig reached on an error.

Mallory McDowell (Nicholasville, Ky.) pushed the lead to 2-0 with an RBI in the fourth before Midway put the game out of reach with a seven-spot in the fifth.

Taylor Dukate (Owensboro, Ky.) opened the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single before stealing second, allowing Kennadi Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) to steal home on a double steal. Dukate then scored on an RBI single by Makayla McDowell, pushing Midway's lead to 5-0.

Mallory McDowell then added a two-run single, while Cortney Collins (Henderson, Ky.) hit a two-run single to cap the seven-run inning that extended the lead to 9-0.

Makayla McDowell picked up the win in the circle and improved to 2-0 on the year. She tossed a complete game shutout scattering four hits in the win.
