Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - A total team effort and a dominant second-half run helped the Midway men's basketball team snap a six-game losing streak Saturday, as the Eagles got back in the win column with an 80-65 win over River States Conference foe Indiana Southeast.
Things couldn't have started much better for Midway. After scoring on their first possession, the Grenadiers missed eight consecutive shots and after Decoreio Smith converted a layup, the Eagles held a 17-2 lead.
But after the offense stalled for a prologued period, IUS took advantage. After closing the first half on a 10-1 run, the Grenadiers scored four straight out of the locker room to pull even at 36 with 18:50 to play.
Undeterred, the Eagles wasted no time taking control back, as Robbie Henry gave them the lead back with a layup 25 seconds later.
Over the next 9 minutes, 32 seconds, the Eagles outscored the Grenadiers 30-7, holding them to 3-of-12 with four turnovers in that stretch. Henry's layup also began a 10-of-17 shooting stretch for Midway.
Smith and Jalen Cincore, who went a combined 6-of-8 from 3-point range, led a balanced offense with 21 points each, while Henry (11) and Donnie Miller (10) also finished in double figures.
Henry (nine rebounds) and Nick Keeton (nine points, 10 rebounds) both missed double-doubles by the slimmest of margins as the Eagles held a 46-28 edge on the glass. Midway also had the game's assist leader in Will VanHook, who dished out six.
Even more impressive might have been the effort by the Eagle defense, which held star IUS guard Jacobi Hendricks to just 11 points on 11 field goal attempts. Hendricks entered the day first in the RSC and sixth in the country in scoring at 24.9 points per game.
With its first win since Dec. 2, Midway improves to 5-10 overall, 3-6 in the RSC. The Eagles now have a great chance to improve their chances to make the conference tournament, with four of their next five games coming against teams with losing records in the RSC.
However, the one exception will be in their next outing, as the Eagles travel to face West Virginia Tech (13-4, 5-2) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
