Box Score BECKLEY, W.V. - Midway rallied back from one big deficit before an eight-minute, second-half heater by West Virginia Tech proved too much to overcome, as the Golden Bears pulled away for an 88-69 River States Conference men's basketball win Tuesday.
Little went right for Midway early, as Tech raced out to an 18-5 lead before Donnie Miller quickly got the Eagles back in the game.
Miller, who scored a season high 26 points, made four consecutive 3-point attempts in a 3-minute, 14-second stretch. On the possession following his fourth basket, a Nick Keeton layup tied the game at 24.
WVU Tech rallied again to go ahead 40-30 at halftime before Midway responded, pulling within 51-48 when Decoreio Smith, who chipped in 13 points, made a 3-pointer with 12:56 to play.
But that gave way to an astounding run by the Golden Bear offense, which proceeded to make 11 consecutive field goal attempts over an eight-minute period, with five of those shots being 3-pointers.
Brant Smithers accounted for 11 of Tech's 17 made 3-pointers en route to a 35-point performance.
The Bears also held a 46-33 rebounding advantage, with three different players grabbing 11 boards.
The Eagles fall to 5-11, 3-7 in the RSC.
Midway has a great opportunity to get back into the conference tournament race, as its next four opponents are under .500 in league play. This begins with a 3 p.m. road matchup against 3-7 Alice Lloyd (Ky.) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
