Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. - Ahead by 22 points in the second half and seemingly on its way to a fourth-straight win, the Midway men's basketball team instead found itself leaving Brescia in a stunned haze, as the Bearcats came roaring back for a 92-88 overtime win in a River States Conference matchup Saturday.
The Eagles looked set to cruise from the start, opening up a double-digit lead midway through the first half, one that would stretch all the way to 59-37 five minutes into the second.
The Bearcats began turning up the pressure little by little, first cutting the deficit to single digits (65-56) on a John Saenz jump shot with 8:29 remaining.
It then dwindled to 67-61 on a Gonzalo Luque 3-pointer with 7:30 to play, then 67-65 on a Camdem Pfeister triple just 1:20 later, and when Luque hit another 3 with 3:28 left, the Bearcats had their first lead 70-69.
Luque would hit six 3s on the game, none bigger than his last. After the Eagles retook the lead 76-75 on two Tobias Thompson free throws, Luque was able to bank in an off-kilter looking long-range shot with just 4.9 seconds to play to put the Bearcats in front 78-76.
The Eagles weren't done though, and even managed to give themselves a momentum boost heading into overtime. After catching the inbounds pass with a head of steam, Jalen Cincore passed to Nick Keeton, who dribbled across half court and hit a still-charging Cincore, who got a contested look near the basket that bounced off the rim before dropping in at the buzzer to extend the game.
Cincore, who tied Pfeister with a game-high 26 points, gave Midway its last lead of the day 82-80 on an overtime jumper, with the Eagles tying the score twice after that, the last coming on a pair of Will VanHook free throws to make it 86-86 with 1:37 remaining.
But off an Eagle turnover, one of 30 they had that led to 30 Brescia points, the Bearcats went back in front for good on a Pfeister layup.
Any chance for more late heroics were squashed with four seconds remaining, when John Saenz secured an offensive rebound off a missed free throw. He was then fouled and went to the line and hit 1-of-2 for the game's final point, completing Brescia's massive comeback.
Donnie Miller had 21 points off the bench, moving to within just 34 points of Midway's all-time scoring record. Thompson added 18, which tied for the most he's scored in an Eagle uniform.
Nick Keeton had his sixth double-digit rebounding effort of the season, grabbing 14 boards for the Eagles, who fall to 8-12 overall and 6-8 in the RSC.
Things don't get any easier for Midway, which hosts an Indiana Kokomo program it has never beaten at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
