Men's basketball team sets new road scoring record, survives OT thriller at IU East

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. - The Midway men's basketball team set a program record for most points scored in a road game against Indiana East on Saturday, and every one of them was needed.

A Will VanHook layup with 45 seconds to play broke a tie, and Midway was able to hold the Red Wolves scoreless the rest of the way to pick up a critical 106-101 River States Conference win.

Midway shot 61 percent from the floor and had five players finish the game in double figures to eclipse the previous road scoring record, set on Feb. 18, 2018 in a 115-100 loss to Indiana Kokomo.

Late into the second half, it didn't appear that total would be needed. Nick Keeton, who made 11-of-12 field goal attempts on his way to a 24-point game, helped spark a 14-0 run in just a 1-minute, 28-second span by scoring five points in 12 seconds.

Keeton, who also had a team-best seven rebounds, hit a jumper, then immediately converted a steal into a 3-point play as the Eagles stetched their lead all the way to 86-72.

The deficit was still in double-figures until a Colt Meyer 3-pointer with 5:01 remaining made it 92-83. This, however, led to the offense's only major lull of the game, as the Eagles proceeded to go 0-for-7 from the field and 0-for-2 from the line over the final 5:11.

In that time, the Red Wolves came all the way back to tie the score at 92 on a Devon Woods layup with 18 seconds left.

Midway went up 101-97 on a Robbie Henry layup before East again tied it with under a minute to play. But it was then that VanHook dribbled through a sea of bodies into the paint for a reverse layup to give the Eagles the lead back.

After two Red Wolf misses on the other end, Jalen Cincore then sealed the game when he took a Keeton outlet pass all the way to the rim for a dunk through contact that turned into a 3-point play.

Keeton's scoring output was nearly equaled by the 23 points of Donnie Miller, who is now just 72 points away from breaking Kwon Evans' school scoring record of 2,005 points. Miller and VanHook had a team-high five assists.

Cincore (15), Tobias Thompson (14) and Isaiah Ramey (13) scored in double-figures as well for Midway, which improves to 5-7 in RSC play. A loss would have pulled the Eagles and Red Wolves (3-9) even in the standings.

Midway will look to earn a third-straight win at home against Oakland City (Ind.) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Eagles defeated the Mighty Oaks 70-55 on the road on Nov. 29.
