Softball drops two back-and-forth heartbreakers at Oakland City

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - There were big innings aplenty in a Sunday softball doubleheader between Midway and Oakland City, but sadly, none of the Eagles' surges helped produce a win.

A four-run seventh left the Eagles one run short in a 6-5 loss in the opener, while the Oaks rallied for two runs in their final at-bat to steal a 10-9 win in game two of the River States Conference showdown.

GAME ONE

The Eagles appeared left for dead heading into their last at-bat, as a two-run Emma Williams single in the sixth inning gave OCU a 6-1 lead.

The seventh began in excellent fashion as pinch hitter Sidney Hudnall led off with a solo home run. An error and RBI single by Kennadi Thompson cut the deficit to 6-3, then things got very interesting when a two-run home run by Katie Rhodes made it 6-5 with just one out.

Unfortunately, the Mighty Oaks were able to recover, as the game ended following consecutive Eagle flyouts.

GAME TWO

The offensive momentum carried over into game two, as Midway's nine runs and 15 hits were both season highs. And it all started with Ryann Berger leading off the game with a home run.

The lead would change hands four times over the next six innings, but Midway appeared to take the upper hand in the sixth. Down 8-6, Sawyer Snodgrass tied the game with a two-run single before coming around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Eagles a one-run lead they'd take into the bottom of the seventh.

Sadly, the lead would change one more time. After the first two batters reached on singles, Midway was able to record two outs, only for Gabbie Countryman to tie the game with an RBI and Bailey Cox to walk it off with another.

Tenley Gilbert led an offense that saw five players record multiple hits, putting together a monster 4-for-5 game where she had an RBI and two runs scored. It marked the second time in four games Gilbert had at least three hits.

Berger had three hits and two runs scored, Rhodes homered again on a three-run shot in the fourth, while Snodgrass and Payton Baum also had two hits for 4-12 Midway, which drops to 2-4 in RSC play.

Sunday was the first of a three-doubleheaders-in-three-days stretch for the Eagles, who travel to face in-state RSC foe Brescia on Monday, with game one starting a 2 p.m.
