Box Score 2 MIDWAY, Ky. - An up-and-down day produced and up-and-down result for the Midway softball team, which split a River States Conference doubleheader against Ohio Christian Saturday.
The Eagles lost the opener 3-1, but pulled ahead on a fourth-inning Sidney Hudnall home run in game two, which they eventually won 5-2.
GAME ONE
The Eagles put runners in scoring position in each of their first four at-bats, but were only able to manage one run, and even that produced a missed opportunity. With two on and one out and Midway down 1-0, Kennadi Thompson singled home Ryann Berger to tie the game.
Attempting to score from second base, Tenley Gilbert got a late jump and eventually got caught in a rundown and was tagged out at third base. Thompson took second on the throw, but rounded the base too far, and Trailblazer third baseman Chandler Hayes alertly threw to second to complete the rare RBI single turned double play.
It would stay 1-1 until the sixth when Emma Hastings, who also drove in a run in the second inning, took advantage of a strong, out-blowing wind and hit a two-run home run to left field, which proved to be the difference.
Gilbert and Payton Baum each had two hits, while Breanna Beach surrendered three runs and six hits in seven innings pitched.
GAME TWO
With the score tied 2-2 in the fourth inning, Hudnall, who also had a two-out RBI double in the second inning, gave the Eagles their first lead of the day with another big two-out hit, this one a solo home run.
The Trailblazers seemed primed to tie the game back up in the fifth, only for a great defensive play by Berger to preserve the lead. Playing in centerfield, Berger fielded a Karlee Steele single and threw a bullet home to gun down Kylee Bako, who was attempting to score from second base.
Midway then proceeded to add runs on RBIs by Katie Rhodes and Sawyer Snodgrass in the bottom of the fifth, then rode the arm of Makayla McDowell, who threw three-and-a-third innings of shutout relief to get the win.
Hudnall, Berger, Snodgrass and Gilbert all had two hits, with Gilbert driving home Berger with a double to tie the score 2-2 in the third inning.
Midway improves to 7-13 overall and 5-5 in the RSC. The Eagles are back home Sunday in a doubleheader against Point Park (Pa.) that was rescheduled from Friday due to weather issues.
Game one begins at 1 p.m.
