Box Score 2 RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Midway quickly got over a late-game collapse in the opener of a River States softball doubleheader against Rio Grande Saturday, securing a split with a blowout win in game two.
The Red Storm brought home five runs in the fifth inning to win the first game 7-4 before the Eagles pulled away for an 8-1 victory in the second.
GAME ONE
Despite having just five hits, Midway raced out to a 4-1 lead, scoring three times in the first inning, then adding another run in the third on a Sawyer Snodgrass single.
But after getting within 4-2 in the fifth, Rio scored four times in the sixth before the Eagles could even record an out. The biggest blow came on a three-run double by Madison Perry with the bases loaded.
GAME TWO
Despite the disappointing end of the previous game, Midway came out on fire again with another three-run first inning, sparked by a Kennadi Thompson RBI double, a Carly Jones RBI single and an error.
Jones, who also closed the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth, was one of five Eagles who had two hits in game two, joined by Thompson, Ryann Berger, Payton Baum and Sidney Hudnall. Berger added RBIs, while Katie Rhodes scored two runs.
Though Midway had just one more hit than the Red Storm, the Eagles did a much better job making theirs count. Eagle starter Alexia Hoskins allowed just one run off of 12 Red Storm hits, as she and her defense stranded 10 Rio runners.
Hoskins struck out two without a walk to earn her third win of the season.
Midway, which is 7-3 in its last 10 games, improves to 9-7 in the RSC. The Eagles hit the road to face conference leader Indiana Southeast (13-2) for a doubleheader Wednesday. Game one is set to begin at 2 p.m.
