Box Score 2 MIDWAY, Ky. - In good position to improve its standing in the River States Conference West division, the Midway softball was instead upset in a pair of softball home games against Brescia Friday.
The Bearcats scored five unanswered runs in both games, winning the first 5-3 and the second 7-2.
GAME ONE
The Eagles looked to be in complete control after a third-inning RBI single by Carly Jones game them a 3-0 lead. But things turned immediately when Katy Fisher led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field.
That was the first of four hits in the inning for Brescia, which eventually tied the game when Courtney Payton hit an RBI double, then score when ensuing batter Kaylyn Sowders singled.
Fisher, who had just two RBIs on the season entering Saturday, then gave the Bearcats a 4-3 lead on a sixth-inning single before the scoring was capped on an RBI Berlyn Uken double.
Jones reached base in all three of her plate appearances, while Katie Rhodes had an RBI single and scored a run in the first inning and also stole three bases.
GAME TWO
Midway battled back after allowing two runs in the first inning, tying the score following an RBI single by Sidney Hudnall in the second and a sacrifice fly by Payton Baum in the fourth.
But the Eagles also squandered additional scoring opportunities, stranding three runners in scoring position in the first five innings. This helped the Bearcats retake the lead with a run in the fourth before they put things away with a four-run sixth, three of those coming on a Lindsey Peyton home run.
It was the second homer of the afternoon for a Brescia team that had just four on the season entering the day. The Bearcats also snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Eagles.
The Eagles fall to 16-22 overall and 14-14 in the RSC. They are still one game back of 15-13, third-place Oakland City (Ind.) in the West Division standings, after the Mighty Oaks were swept in a doubleheader at Indiana Southeast Saturday.
Midway is scheduled to host IU Southeast next Saturday, but still has to makeup a previously postponed doubleheader at IUPUC (Ind.). Those games are expected to be played in the middle of next week, but an exact date has yet to be announced.
