Softball splits with IUS on senior day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway softball bid farewell to seniors Carly Jones, Katie Rhodes, Kyra McCall and Courtney Collins on Saturday in a senior day celebration that occurred between the first and second games of a doubleheader against Indiana Southeast.

After the Eagles lost the opener 6-3, Jones, Rhodes and McCall all played a key role in a four-run sixth inning the sparked the Eagles to a split, thanks to a 6-2 win in the second game.

GAME TWO

Jones, who had two hits in each game, gave Midway a boost in the bottom of the fifth, when her RBI single brought home Tenley Gilbert to tie the game at two.

After the first two batters were retired in the bottom of the sixth, a Ryann Berger single and IUS error put runners on first third. Next batter Sidney Hudnall then gave Midway the lead when she chopped a single just over the glove of Grenadier first baseman McKenzie Walters.

Midway added three more runs, with three of its seniors making the most of their final home plate appearances. Rhodes, who also had an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, scored on a bases loaded walk by McCall. Jones and Kennadi Thompson then drew bases loaded walks as well to help the Eagles close River States Conference play with a 16-16 record.

The offense came to life in time to earn Alexia Hoskins another win in conference play. Hoskins allowed just two unearned runs off of two uncharacteristic errors by the Midway defense in the second inning.

Hoskins, who scattered six hits in seven innings, currently has an 8-2 record against RSC opponents.

GAME ONE

Midway briefly took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning following a two-run home run by Payton Baum. But that was answered in the top of the fifth when Savannah Gaither recorded three of her five RBIs in the game with a bases-clearing, three-run double.

The Eagles got a run back when Rhodes drove home Jones on a fifth-inning single, but IUS responded with two more runs in the seventh to get to the final tally of 6-3.

Improving to 18-24 overall, Midway now waits to find out who it will play in the opening round of the River States Conference Championship, which will be held next Thursday-Saturday in South Charleston, W. Va.

Pairings are expected to be determined when all conference games conclude on Saturday.
