Box Score 2 MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway's offense came to life in the second game and the Eagles rode out a marathon pitching effort by Alexia Hoskins to earn a softball doubleheader split against River States East leader Shawnee State (Ohio) Sunday.
The Eagles mustered just four hits in a 7-0 loss in the opener, but won game two 4-1, thanks to the combined 1.000 on-base percentages Sawyer Snodgrass and Kyra McCall, and Hoskins coming one out shy of a complete game shutout.
GAME ONE
The Bears scored four of their seven runs with two outs, the first two coming on a tone-setting, two-run single by Mackenzie Hale in the first inning. That was the start of a monster game for Hale, who went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
The Eagles had their chances to cut into the lead, but left seven runners on base, with five of those being stranded in scoring position.
McCall reached safely in all three of her trips to the plate, finishing with a single and two walks. Inserted with two outs in the third inning, Hoskins allowed just four hits and one run in four-and-a-third innings.
GAME TWO
After starting the second game of a Saturday doubleheader, throwing 55 pitches in Sunday's opener and dealing with a blister on her throwing hand, Hoskins seemed unlikely to go deep into her scheduled start in the second game.
Instead, the freshman stuck things out until the bitter end. Despite recording just one strikeout, she kept the ball in play for her defense, allowing just four hits and taking a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning.
She even got within one out of a complete game shutout before a Brittani Wolfenbarker RBI single ended it. Hoskins, who had thrown 224 pitches in the span of three games, was then pulled for Makayla McDowell, who proceeded to record her second save in as many days by striking out Jenna Christopher.
The offense in game two ran through Snodgrass and McCall, who reached safely a combined seven times in seven plate appearances.
Snodgrass went 4-for-4 with two RBIs. She brought home Ryann Berger with a first-inning single to start Midway's scoring, then ended it in the fourth with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt that brought home Tenley Gilbert.
McCall, who also had three hits in a game against Alice Lloyd Saturday, reached safely three more times, going 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI single in the third. McCall also scored a run on a second-inning Kennadi Thompson single.
With 10 wins in its last 14 games, Midway improves to 14-16 overall and 12-8 in the RSC. The Eagles were supposed to take on RSC leading Indiana Southeast on Tuesday, but for the second time in a week, that series has been postponed due to weather concerns.
