MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway University Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of
Roscoe Moonieyan as the new head coach for the men's and women's tennis programs. A seasoned leader in collegiate and developmental tennis, Moonieyan brings over 15 years of coaching experience, an extensive track record of competitive success and a lifelong passion for building winning cultures on and off the court.
Moonieyan's coaching journey spans across the NAIA, NCAA Division-II and elite junior tennis programs, having left a lasting impact at every stop. Most recently, he served as the assistant coach for Georgetown College's men's and women's tennis teams and previously held prominent roles including head coach at Purdue University Northwest and Union College—where he guided programs to historic milestones in national rankings, player accolades and academic achievement.
While at Purdue Northwest, Moonieyan led the program to its best seasons in school history, highlighted by the women's team earning its first-ever national ranking and the men's team reaching a historic No. 19 national ranking in NCAA Division-II. His recruiting prowess and player development skills were evident as he brought in top-tier talent such as nationally ranked singles and doubles players, while also serving as a regional rater for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Moonieyan's longest and perhaps most impactful tenure came at Union College, now known as Union Commonwealth University, in Barbourville, Ky. He first served as the assistant coach from June 2009 to June 2011 and because of his efforts, he was named the 2010 NAIA East Region Assistant Coach of the Year. He then returned to Union in July 2013 to serve as the head coach for nearly a decade. Under his leadership, the men's and women's teams became consistent national contenders in the NAIA. He coached teams to multiple quarterfinal appearances at national championships, earned multiple top-10 national rankings and mentored numerous All-Americans, conference award-winners and scholar-athletes.
In between his two stints at Union, Moonieyan served as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama Huntsville for the 2012-13 season. He was named the 2013 NCAA Division-II South Region Assistant Coach of the Year after helping lead the Chargers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory.
In addition to his collegiate achievements, Moonieyan has directed high-performance junior programs at facilities like Score Tennis & Fitness Academy and Top Seed Tennis Club, as well as served as tennis director at Windridge Tennis & Sports Camp in Vermont, where he managed a staff of 20 and oversaw programming for 400 youth players.
Moonieyan earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management & Marketing from Union College in 2009. He is also a certified Professional Tennis Instructor through the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), the largest global organization for tennis instructors and coaches.
"I am excited to be working with coach Moonienyan," said Interim Athletic Director Dr.
Heath Morgan. "He has a proven track record of success and brings a high level of experience, leadership and professionalism to our tennis program. I believe he will be great for the student athletes in tennis as well as the Midway community."
Moonieyan expressed excitement about joining the Midway University Eagles and contributing to the university's growing athletics tradition.
"I am really excited to be part of Midway Athletics and to be given the opportunity to lead the tennis programs," he said. "Midway Athletics and the university has shown so much growth over the years and it's an honor to be part of their journey. I look forward to what the future holds for tennis and I can't wait to get things going this fall."
With his vast experience, proven results and dedication to student-athlete development, Coach Moonieyan is poised to lead the Eagle tennis programs into a new era of competitive excellence. Midway University welcomes him and looks forward to the future of its tennis program under his leadership.
