Gottler hits qualifying standard in javelin at outdoor T&F opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. - After not competing during indoor track and field season, Midway's Trinity Gottler got right into mid-season form at the outdoor opener on Saturday.

Gottler had four top-three finishes, highlighted by a national qualifying throw in the javelin at the Pioneer Invitational, hosted by Transylvania University in Lexington.

The Eagles earned two wins and four runner-up finishes at the event, which did not record team scores.

Gottler, who was with the Midway women's wrestling program during the winter, quickly shook off any rust with a 41.65-meter toss on her last throw of the day, good enough to eclipse the national 'B' standard of 40.94.

In the process, Gottler, who finished second to the 42.40-meter throw of Hannah Boersema of St. Francis (Ind.), broke her own previous program record of 40.46 and secured a spot at the Outdoor National Championships for the second-consecutive season.

She also placed second in discus (40.30) and broke her previous program records in shot put (12.27) and hammer throw (46.99), placing third in both.

Midway's highly touted pole vault team began its season by taking the top-three spots in the event. Indoor All-Americans Maddi Reed and Makayla Brooks both cleared 3.40 meters, as did teammate Cate Copola.

Due to tie-breakers, Reed earned first place with Brooks and Copola getting second and third.

Reed also contributed to a win on the track side, as she, Emilee Cecil, Kashlynn Rice and Lillian Alcorn took first in the 4x100-meter relay in 51.27 seconds.

Rice got herself a runner-up as well with a 17.48-second run in the 100 hurdles.

Elsewhere, Ariah Egleston placed third in the 3,000 steeplechase (13:20.83) and Cecil was eighth in the 200 (27.63).

Midway returns to action next Saturday, traveling to Louiville for the Jim Vargo Invitational at Bellarmine University.
